About The Tartan Pie
I literally stumbled upon “The Tartan Pie”. Knowing a bakery was in my future, I was driving to the boonies to look at some tart presses for sale, and there I met “Scotty”. Scotty and I got to talkin, and with both of us being sailors, had a lot of things to talk about. Just so happened that Scotty had a bakery that he wanted to sell. Only a few weeks later, The Tartan Pie bakery was purchased in November 2009 by myself and my partner Derek.  We are fortunate that Scotty shared his recipes with us, encouraging us to take the business to the next level. We’re not scottish as he is, but we loved his food, his ideas and decided to keep the recipes the same and keep the name.
In researching modern techniques for marketing, I came across blogging and being naive and unfamiliar with it, I searched further and stumbled upon WordPress and thought I’d give it a try. Although I did not get WordPress up and running in 5 minutes as it advertises, I was able to get it going in about 24 hours spread over about a week.
I like to tell stories, and on occasion people have told me that they like my stories so much that I have inspired them to move forward with an idea or to explore a new path. With this in mind, I thought that maybe there’s a chance that there’s a larger audience out there, and that maybe my existing friends, family and customers might be interested in what I have to say. I’m not so sure what I might say, but I’m going to try and cover food trivia, baking basics, kitchen gadgets and stories.
So here I go again, trying something new (and very exciting) and we’ll see where it goes.
Cheers and happy baking,
Theresa
Hi Theresa,
Just found your website and blog so wanted to take the opportunity to tell you again how excited Kevin & I are that you and Derek have found your bakery and embarked on this new venture. And of course I must tell you again how AMAZING your Tartan Pies are. KJ & I and one friend who was over Christmas Eve DEVOURED an entire pie, and they’re quite large. We wanted more. Kevin got home, mouth watering to try a piece, and we had absolutely no sympathy for him because we knew he was going to get to have Tartan Pie for Christmas Dinner while working on the ferry. If there had been time to order more, I’d have chucked my entire Boxing Day Dinner menu (we didn’t have a big dinner on Christmas due to Kevin’s work schedule on the ferry) and just served Tartan Pie. I have a call in to Derek right now to order a Curried Chicken Pie for tonight. A friend will probably be joining us and KJ & I have been looking fwd to trying more of your products. The pastry alone is phenomenal, and I knew it would be good, but I was so impressed with how delicious the contents of the pie were. And you know, I have a pretty good reputation when it comes to cooking and am picky about what I consider good food. Congratulations to you both!
My holidays have been transformed since I discovered this little gem of a bakery just down the road from where we live. On Thanksgiving and Christmas, I buy their famous ‘Tartan Pie’ which is a mouth-watering ‘turkey meal in a pie’ nestled inside the most flaky, delectable crust your taste buds will ever experience. And they even include the gravy! So now I can sit down and enjoy my company instead of being in a frenzy and cooking all day long. And my friends and family are now hooked. Whenever my hubby and I go to the mainland to visit family, my sister-in-law always asks me to bring her two of them. Now we are all Tartan Pie addicts and not willing to go ‘cold turkey’… (little pun there). They also make a wide variety of sweet and savoury deliciousness.
So next time you decide to bring your family out to Englishman River Falls, the Coombs Market, or the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, why not drop into the Tartan Pie Bakery at the ‘Unicorn Farm’ on Errington Road and become a Tartan Pie addict like me?!
Hi Theresa,
Sounds like you have found a new and exciting adventure! Very excited for your and wish you all the success you deserve. If I am ever out your way, I will definitely look you up as you know how I feel about good home baked items.
Take care
